Four Seasons Fly Fishing Reports

  • Fly Fishing Report June 17, 2017

A very nice week of weather is in store for us here in the Truckee/Tahoe area.  Water conditions have come down a bit but will probably rise some do to the heat and fresh snow in the mountains this past Monday.  Some of the roads are starting to open up and I will check out access and fishing as time permits. Lately, I have been busting out the Tenkara rods for something different.  The Tenkara rods have been a ton of fun and have lots of flexibility for use with Continue Reading

The fishing is good for those willing to invest the time.  Yeah, the water is high but, the trout are fat and sassy.  If the rivers are too much the reservoirs are fishing great!  Boca and Stampede are nearly full.  Prosser is filling slowly.  The bugs are starting to make there appearances including the mosquitos.  Time to start carrying the bug spray. Truckee River **  The flows in town are 2,000cfs and 3,100cfs at Boca.  Water temps have been getting to the low 50’s mid-day. Water master kicked up the Continue Reading

This had to be the nicest Memorial Day Weekend in a number of years.  Hope you got out and celebrated.  Thank you to those that served so that I can continue to have the best job ever! The conditions are starting to change as the tailwaters have already started to drop and are supposed to drop some more.  The Truckee river flow has come down some as well.  Fishing remains good for those willing to put in the time.  Fat, healthy Rainbows and Browns are being caught.  The Stillwaters are Continue Reading

The fishing continues to be pretty good despite the high flows.  Expect the flows to continue high for awhile as we are in the middle of the runoff.  There are plenty of bugs in the water but not much of a hatch unless it is overcast and even then it was pretty light.  Nymphing and Streamers are still the best bet.  If you are not hooking up move.  The fish seemed to be schooled up and if you find one others are close by. Over on the Little Truckee there Continue Reading

Looks like we are in for a little change in weather after being super nice up here the last several days.  It was the nicest opener in the last several years.  I was able to get the boats out and running for the season. Plus, got in some fishing opening week since Alpine is only open the next two weekends. We are in the early stages of runoff.  The rivers are a little off color, high, and bouncing up and down a bit.  That doesn’t mean the fish are not Continue Reading

We are in the spring transition time of our fishing season.  The wet weather keeps on coming in between sessions of awesome sunny weather.  The rivers are all higher then they have been in years and are expected to be up for awhile.  It is nice to get a good flush on the system and to see all of the changes that have occurred this winter.  There are a several new trees in the river as well as some rearrangement of the bottom and side channels.  That being said the Continue Reading

It has been awhile since my last report so I figured I better update.  The new year has brought record snow and water to the area.   Given the weather I have been super busy at Alpine and not getting much fishing done.   It is safe to say that government officials will now say we are not in a drought.  All flows are up except the Little Truckee between Boca and Stampede and that could change. Three things to know when trying to fish in our area after this Continue Reading

I have returned from the Klamath Steelhead season.   The season was different than past years in that it was very wet instead of hot and sunny.  One of the wettest Octobers in recent history.  Great for the water and drought situation in California.  The Steelhead seems to like it as well.   Thanks to all of you that made it a success again this season.  My window on the Klamath is pretty short reservations for next season are available now. Back here the the Truckee area, it is transition Continue Reading

The recent storm has really been great for the fishing statewide.  Fish love a fresh shot of water to get them going especially Steelhead.  Currently, I am guiding Steelhead on the Klamath River in northern California.  The Steelhead are starting to arrive on the wave of the recent rains.  I have had some excellent days here in the north state.  Been using many different fly fishing techniques to dupe the adult and half-pounders roaming the Klamath river.  Swinging traditional patterns on the floating line or very light tip has been Continue Reading

It is transition time here in the Truckee Area.  Truckee/Tahoe saw a little bit of snow yesterday and that has given way to some cooler weather in the North Tahoe area.  Fishing on the Truckee has been pretty good despite the lower water again this fall.  Have also heard of some nice fish being caught out at Prosser Reservoir. As I normally do this time of the season I head up to the Klamath River to guide Steelhead for the month of October.  I have a few prime dates left Continue Reading
