Steelhead - Poor but improving Flows – 2,200 CFS at Natomas.  – high 50's to low 60. Water clarity – Good.Cooler weather signals the end of striper fishing on the American at least for the larger non resident fish. A few caught again this week but most were shakers as we're on the tail end of things now. Water flows dropped slightly again this week to 2,200 and the river cooled a bit as well. Best flies have been Byng’s Bait fish in white/chartreuse, Toby’s American River Rainbow Clouser,  Angel's Smolt, Angels Chartreuse and White on sinking lines.Steelhead are trickling in to the system more and more each day. It is still a little early but we are seeing good signs again this week. Right now we are predominantly seeing half-pounders yet we get reports of a few more adult steelhead sightings every week. We are excited about the potential for a good season this year and look forward to these fish returning to[…]

Temp.  – high 50's to low 60. Water clarity – GoodThe American continues to fish quite well for Striper. The shad are dwindling so striper are spreading out. Water is clear right now and this is making for some exciting fishing. Seeing a nice fish stock your fly before attacking it in a mad rush is awesome. This last week we had some real hogs follow 4 to 6 lb fish to the boat. Talk about getting your heart rate going!Best flies continue to be Byng’s Bait fish in white/chartreuse, Toby’s American River Rainbow Clouser,  Angels Smolt, Angels Chartreuse and White on sinking lines. In addition to striper there are some half pounders in the system and we have had a few adult steelhead sightings.Call the shop at (916)722-1055 or Off the Hook fly fishing directly at (707)287-2939 to set up a striper or shad trip on the American.Delta Stiper- Poor Water Temp 60. Northern California Fly Fishing Report – July 27, 2017Best Bets: American - Striper, Lower Sac - trout, Feather - Steelhead, Delta - Smallmouth                                     American River Striper– Good. Shad – Fair Steelhead – Poor to Fair. Flows – 3,500 CFS at Fair Oaks. Temp.  – high 50's to low 60. Water clarity – GoodThe American has fished quite well the last couple weeks for Striper and Shad. Things are changing right now though. First lets look at the shad fishing. Fish are thinning out a bit and the best fishing has been in the evening. Best fly has been Bloody Maria. Things are definitely on the decline and shad will begin heading back to the ocean soon. Now is the time to get out and hit them before they're gone. We continue to have good striper numbers here on the river. Every year we see an interesting phenomenon. The large fish have been feasting on the shad for weeks. We have seen some real pigs cruising around and swiping at smaller striper and shad that are hooked up. Once the shad leave, striper tend to spread out and go on a about a two week terror hitting flies with heightened. After the two weeks or so is over[…]

Northern California Fly Fishing Report – June 17, 2017 Best Bets... American(shad/striper), McCloud, Hat Creek(trout) or Lower Yuba (shad!!!)American River  Striper – Great  Shad – Great  Flows 6,400 cfs Water Temp high 50’s degrees. Water Clarity – clearShad are everywhere on the American and striper are too. Both are being caught with good regularity. Flows are still high and wading can be difficult but those fishing out of a drift or jet boat are having good success. For striper stripping flies on sinking lines is the name of the game. Traditionally good flies for this time of year will be Byng’s Bait fish in white/chartreuse, Toby’s American River Rainbow Clouser and the Stay Hungry Streamer in gray/white. Shad have been taking Bloody Marias and Bernie’s Bangers along with Spasmodiam 335 and Reanimator Shaddis. Swinging sinking tips or 4 or 5 weight switch rod is our favorite way to get them. Stop by the shop for the complete list of striper and shad patterns that are currently getting it done. Fishing has been best early and late for shad and striper on most days but just because the light is on the water is not reason to leave especially for shad. If you find them they will usually eat and where you find one you[…]
