Four Seasons Fly Fishing Reports

Welcome to Fall!  Crisp mornings, sunny days, and no crowds.  The best time to be in our area. The fishing has be really good the last couple weeks.  Look for the flows to get jacked around a bit as the reservoirs are being dropped for winter.  Still some bugs coming off throughout the day and be getting some good windows of Dry Fly fishing.  On the other hand, fishing big streamers below Boca inflow can be pretty good as well. A bit of transition time here as I move up Continue Reading

I am back from my Fly Fishing Vacation in Wydaho.  Do to some poor planning on my part we ended up going to the Zone of Totality for the recent Eclipse.  Everything worked out fine and the fishing at times was as good as it gets for dries and streamers.  The Eclipse was cool as well. While I was away the afternoon thunderstorms have kept things in pretty good shape for this time of year.  We are in the “Dog Days 0f Summer”  but, it is not as “Doggy” as Continue Reading

Last week’s thunderstorms and rain did wonders for the fishing.  Water temps were held down to nice fishable levels well into the afternoons.  Dry Fly action is still good both early and late.  Caddis and Mayflies are making up the bulk of the bugs and the Little Yellow Stones quickly fading away.  Streamer action has started to slow as well.  Although not as warm as the last few seasons we are approaching the “dog days of summer”.  Good time to explore the high country or visit the Smallmouth Bass at Continue Reading

Dry Fly time!  The fish are looking up pretty much everywhere you would want to fish.  Dries and Dry Dropper rigs are key.  Water temps are moving up so follow the temps for best fishing.  It’s okay you can put the indicator rig down for awhile.  Now would be a good time to try Tenkara. Truckee River *** The flows are 148cfs in town and 459cfs at Boca.  Water temps are currently coming up and hitting 64 degrees in the afternoon.  A cool down would be kinda nice.  The fish are Continue Reading

I am now offering Tenkara Fly Fishing as a product option.  To book a trip give me a call 530-386-0525. It is now the time to be here fly fishing.  The river flows are settling down and the water temps are still in the good zone.  All but the higher elevation venues are open.  The fire in Farad is not affecting us at all.  No smoke and we can still access the water above Hirshdale. Truckee River***  The flows are 356cfs in town and 821cfs at Boca.  Mid-day water temps are Continue Reading

Summer has arrived!  Since my last report the roads have started to open up and you can now drive out Jackson Meadows road and down to Milton Reservoir.  The roads and Campgrounds look like they have taken a beating from the flooding this winter.  I imagine that the Forest Service will need some time get things fixed up there.  You can get to Milton just a little rougher than the past. Flows on the Truckee at least have been bumping up and down and, to some extent, on the Little Continue Reading

A very nice week of weather is in store for us here in the Truckee/Tahoe area.  Water conditions have come down a bit but will probably rise some do to the heat and fresh snow in the mountains this past Monday.  Some of the roads are starting to open up and I will check out access and fishing as time permits. Lately, I have been busting out the Tenkara rods for something different.  The Tenkara rods have been a ton of fun and have lots of flexibility for use with Continue Reading

The fishing is good for those willing to invest the time.  Yeah, the water is high but, the trout are fat and sassy.  If the rivers are too much the reservoirs are fishing great!  Boca and Stampede are nearly full.  Prosser is filling slowly.  The bugs are starting to make there appearances including the mosquitos.  Time to start carrying the bug spray. Truckee River **  The flows in town are 2,000cfs and 3,100cfs at Boca.  Water temps have been getting to the low 50’s mid-day. Water master kicked up the Continue Reading

This had to be the nicest Memorial Day Weekend in a number of years.  Hope you got out and celebrated.  Thank you to those that served so that I can continue to have the best job ever! The conditions are starting to change as the tailwaters have already started to drop and are supposed to drop some more.  The Truckee river flow has come down some as well.  Fishing remains good for those willing to put in the time.  Fat, healthy Rainbows and Browns are being caught.  The Stillwaters are Continue Reading

The fishing continues to be pretty good despite the high flows.  Expect the flows to continue high for awhile as we are in the middle of the runoff.  There are plenty of bugs in the water but not much of a hatch unless it is overcast and even then it was pretty light.  Nymphing and Streamers are still the best bet.  If you are not hooking up move.  The fish seemed to be schooled up and if you find one others are close by. Over on the Little Truckee there Continue Reading
