Hi
I'm going on a trip to McLeod, Pit and Hat Creek in May. I'm from Ireland and have never been fishing in California.

Can anyone help me and suggest fly patterns, tactics and rod size to use?

Thanks in advance

Fuzzy

Fuzzy,

I hope your trip goes well! I would say that you would be OK fishing a 4-6 weight rod on these waters. Most of the success I have had on the McCloud and the Pit River have come from high-stick nymhphing, or indicator nymphing. Hat Creek has handed me my hat several times. I have had luck with several different caddis and mayfly nymph patterns on both the Pit and McCloud Rivers.
Most of my fishing has occurred in the fall, when the water has come down a little. We are in the middle of a very dry winter this year (12% of normal precipitation around me) so this may not be a big deal.

Tight Lines,

Dustin
